Read Ezekiel 2:9-3:15
We’ve just read of the physical example of actually digesting the word of God. Now we know what God put in Ezekiel’s open mouth. Ezekiel was open for God. We can only imagine how overwhelmed Ezekiel would have been by this vision.
I was reminded of Jeremiah’s words in Jeremiah 15:16, “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name.” Ezekiel was able to actually do that, devour the word of God!
If you’ve ever lived in a foreign country, then you know the things you continually encounter than are “different” than “back home.” You either embrace it and stay or return back “home.” I thought it curious how one of God’s assurances included the fact that Ezekiel wouldn’t have to go to a land of another tongue. I wasn’t so lucky when God sent us to Mexico! The language and culture barrier can be tricky.
But God’s plan for Ezekiel was to go to the stubborn nation of Israel. They would have been in exile to Babylon at the time. The “nation” had scattered after the fall of Jerusalem. Ezekiel’s job would be that much harder. If he were by himself, that is.
Sometimes our biggest fear is what people are going to think about us, like we need to prove who we are. I would much rather talk about “whose” I am. So why don’t I feel comfortable sharing all the time? Sadly it’s not always the “politically correct” conversation in some situations these days. I always want to glorify God in what I say and do, so I let that motivation take over.
What struck you most in what is happening. I love verse 10 which reads, “Then he added, “Son of man, let all my words sink deep into your own heart first. Listen to them carefully for yourself.” That’s a message we can identify with today. Nothing has changed. God still wants us to let his word sink in “first” so we can be examples for the world by living God-honoring lives.
God was equipping Ezekiel with all the tools he needed. Because we’re holding a Bible, we, too, have been equipped by God. God wants us to digest his words and live with him forever.
Let’s pray. My heart overflows with gratitude when I picture forever with you, LORD. I seek each day to live a life that honors you. Forgive me when I fall short. Help me to see the opportunities you have in mind for me. Bless all my loved ones today and always. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
