John 6:1-15 – Hungry?

Read John 6:1-15

Today’s reading, the feeding of the 5,000, is told in all four gospels. This is an important message for us. Let’s watch a re-enactment of it as told by John’s gospel HERE.

There are some differences between the versions, but I’m not going to focus on those. Instead, what struck me today was how hungry the people were. I’m not necessarily talking about a hunger for food, but for something deeper. It’s like Jesus had this magnet inside him and the people were drawn to him and wanted to swarm him everywhere he went, much like celebrities today who have to fight off paparazzi. Jesus was so much more than a famous person, he was God. Continue reading “John 6:1-15 – Hungry?”

John 5:31-47 – Jesus Reveals Himself

Read John 5:31-47

What a day. First Jesus heals the man at the pool, and then it’s showtime. Jesus is confronted by the religious leaders who are less than pleased. Have you ever been in the “hot seat”? Meaning, caught off guard and not prepared for questions or what is being asked of you to do? It’s uncomfortable. But not for our Lord. He may have wanted to avoid confrontation, but it was likely to happen. It had to happen.

So what did  Jesus have to say? His words probably rocked the world of those listening. However, they listened with deaf ears. Jesus even said their approval or disapproval means nothing. He told them the love of God was not inside them. Imagine if he said that about you – it would hurt me at least. These leaders were too focused on rules and regulations, man made not God made. There were blind to see that God was standing right before them. The Son of God. Continue reading “John 5:31-47 – Jesus Reveals Himself”

John 5:16-30 – Son of God

Read John 5:16-30

Jesus is the Son of God. Yes. Read that again and then really take a moment to ponder on the truth of that statement. Jesus is the Son of God.

Sometimes we get so caught up in getting our tasks done our time for reading our Bible each day takes a back seat. We are so anxious to get on our way, whether it’s to work, to take our kids to practice, to make breakfast, etc. Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe you sit in your chair every waking moment and spend time with God and marvel at the wonder of it all. Most of us don’t have that luxury. However, when we do devote our time to God it should be uninterrupted and reverent time. Continue reading “John 5:16-30 – Son of God”

John 5:1-15 – Get Well

Read John 5:1-15

“Would you like to get well?” What kind of a question is that? Jesus asks a man who has been ill for 38 years if he wants to get well. First of all, I can’t imagine being sick for that long. What kind of life had that man had? If he didn’t have anyone to put him in the water, who brought him to the pool or took care of him?

Sometimes we get stuck on details that aren’t important. But this is one of the “signs” that John uses to show Jesus’ power. We should take notice of what happens, details and all. We can get to know Jesus and his character, get a glimpse of God by watching Jesus. What do we see here? Continue reading “John 5:1-15 – Get Well”

John 4:43-54 – Just Believe

Read John 4:43-54

It seems like Jesus is a bit put out with people at times. I might even go so far as to say, “snarky.” His comment in verse 28, “Must I do miraculous signs and wonders before you people will believe in me?” This was in the NLT translation I have in my Bible. The NLT translation I have given you a link to above says, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?” Not quite as snarky.

Jesus was full of compassion and healed the boy without even setting foot in the official’s house. Of course, Jesus could do that. The official believed it, didn’t plead his case anymore and went home. There had to be faith there, to begin with, or the official wouldn’t have even asked Jesus such a thing. That was a bold faith to be sure. Note this was a civic leader, not a religious leader. Continue reading “John 4:43-54 – Just Believe”
