Acts 15:22-35 – Here’s the Deal

Read Acts 15:22-35

The council met, and an agreement was made. Now it’s time to share with the people, particularly the Gentiles. It’s also a message Jews need to hear and accept as well. As with any decision, some on either side will not be satisfied. But we hear that even the Holy Spirit blessed this decision.

There was another genius move by these leaders. We often see the messenger of such news taking the brunt of the dissatisfaction. The whole church in Jerusalem and the elders chose two men to bring this news to the people. Those men were entrusted with the letter, leaving Paul and Barnabas to minister to the people. They did not have to take any blame or criticism that might be projected from an unhappy believer upon the messenger. Does it seem like I know firsthand what it feels like to bring a message to a group, only to take flack and be ostracized by some? Maybe you do, too.

The council met and made a decision. It was a fair decision that met halfway. Being able to compromise and be flexible is the sign of healthy leadership. When leadership is healthy and together on the same page, the group they are leading tend to be healthier and happier.

What’s important for us to take away, in addition to the fine leadership model, is that focus needs to be taken off “rules” and things we “do.” Our faith and salvation are built on Jesus’ blood and his righteousness. It is by grace that we are saved, not something we have done. It’s ultimately up to God. When too much emphasis is placed on rules and doing the right thing, we can lose sight of all that God has done for us and continues to do for us.

Because we are saved, because we are loved, we should long to serve and be more like Jesus. When we serve, we should never forget it is to glorify God, not glorify ourselves and assure us a place in heaven. The decision of the council sets up this notion perfectly. They wisely took baby steps to move in the right direction. The Jews were able to hold on to a little bit of their “law,” and the Gentiles were expected to obey those “laws” as a part of being a follower of Jesus.

I don’t know about you, but I am feeling blessed by these warriors of the early church who have given us our inheritance. How is God using you to continue that heritage?

Listen to the song CORNERSTONE here, as you reflect on the foundation of your faith.

Let’s pray. Father God, I am in awe of you. Thank you for how you orchestrate the parts of our life that matter to you. May I seek you first in all things. My life is built on you, and with you as my foundation and guide, I am full of power. May I use that power to praise and honor you. Keep my wayward heart in check. Thank you for the strength to stand firm against the evil one who is trying to gain control. With you, God, by my side, we will defeat him again and again. Take away this yuck I am feeling so I can properly praise your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
