Acts 10:1-8 – Meet Cornelius

Read Acts 10:1-8

Cornelius is not one of the apostles following Jesus. But he is going to play a key role in this Chapter, so let’s take some time to get to know him. We learn that he is a Roman army officer, a Greek centurion who was Captain of the Italian Regiment. This would tell us that professionally he was well respected and a strong leader. Even the Jews respected him.

Cornelius also loved and feared God, as did the members of his household. A household would likely contain family and servants. Cornelius was building a relationship with God by prayer and giving generously. We are going to see how God rewards that behavior and uses Cornelius in a mighty way, yet not utilizing his military strength. Cornelius was about to be used by God to teach Peter the lesson God has been waiting for the perfect moment to teach.

Today we hear how God is making the arrangements for Cornelius to meet with Peter. There is no hesitation. Cornelius takes action and sends for Peter. You can bet God is also preparing Peter. God is working with moving parts, our lives, and working them in such ways we can’t begin to imagine. We see that here for example. When we live in God’s will for our lives, we stand ready to be used by him for many purposes not on our radar.

One of my favorite verses, Romans 8:28, seems to be perfectly represented here. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Do you know what God’s purpose is for you? Have you ever thought that maybe your purpose today is different than the one you had yesterday or last year?

Take a moment today to reflect back on how God has used you in the past. Lives have been changed because of you, whether you know it or not. Many times we will never know the impact we have made on a life, even if only a smile in passing on the street. Never believe that God is done with you. Look for the beauty of God in each new day, and wait for him to lead you to your next purpose.

Let’s pray. Lord, I sometimes feel like I am just going through the motions. Each day looks like the next. Thank you for the reminder today that even in the ordinary you are working for good. May I trust you with every aspect of my life. I pray for those who don’t know this peace. Use people to intervene in their lives to make a difference. Give them the clarity to know they just had an encounter with God himself. Like the centurion, may I act on every word from you without hesitation. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
