Read Numbers 17:1-13
The people just didn’t get it, did they? God was leaving no room for doubt about Aaron’s position in the priesthood. It was God’s plan. I love seeing God work in mighty ways. Imagine seeing almonds sprouting on a wood cutting over night! Only God could make such a bold proclamation.
Yet rather than marvel in that and set aside their grievance, the people chose to cling to their fear and anger. Why do people do that, turning away from the peace and mercy of our Lord. What that looks like in our own situation will be different than seeing a broken twig produce fruit. God meant that sign to bring assurance, not fuel their worries.
How many times do we miss God’s display of clarity in our own lives? Maybe you’re facing a big life decision right now. Sometimes we wish God would send his message to us flying through the sky on the backside of an airplane. That would be too easy. God’s messages are often disguised.
Just like the blooming staff was meant to give assurance and take away doubt. God also wanted the staff front and center in the Tabernacle as a constant reminder of this message. The people missed that and continued to feel doomed and forgotten. I don’t want to miss out on God’s message or his loving provision, do you?
God has a way of getting our attention. The more we resist, the harder he must try. I love hearing stories of how God opens doors for people and provides wisdom in some of the strangest places (like the staff). In whatever way God is moving in your life, rely on Romans 8:28 to help. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
Here are some other Bible verses to help us put into perspective God’s intentions for us. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Just a few verses later in Matthew 7:7, “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
The people were upset and not thinking clearly, despite God’s attempts to calm their fears. It’s like they weren’t seeking or expecting God to give them the answer. When we are feeling fearful of something happening in our lives or even in society around us, let the verses from Matthew be our own “staff” of assurance to help us. God is there for us!
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for being patient with me and my wayward ways. I know I often strike out on my own, looking for answers in the wrong places. I treasure you and your forgiveness. Help me to seek you and your will for my life every day you give me on this planet. Help me be strong for those around me who need a helping hand. I pray you are preparing them to hear your message of love and redemption. Thank you for reminders every day in your word to keep me on track. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
