Ezekiel 1:15-28
While we can picture those wheels perfectly, let’s not get stuck on all the details and descriptions no matter how helpful. What is Ezekiel’s message telling us? If we look at the basics of what the wheels may signify, then what’s obvious is how the wheels make it possible to go anywhere, in any direction with ease and grace. Think about it! How much more efficient would we be if we looked at living our lives like that—always going in the right direction. Sky’s the limit to what we can accomplish, even how close we can draw to the heart of God!
If movement wasn’t enough, these darling wheels were also spirit-filled. We, too, can be spirit-filled when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives. I like Ezekiel’s image here, “When the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them.” Just like when we move, we surely hope the spirit is moving, too. Life is so much more rewarding with the Holy Spirit accompanying us.
Of course, those wheels would also be beautiful, dazzling to the eye, “glittering like crystal.” These living beings are certainly interesting when you picture all the faces on their head, having wings, and of course, those amazing wheels. Why did God choose to introduce Ezekiel to these four beings?
Could these four beings be on guard as part of their purpose? Right above them is being described as the throne of God. Ezekiel testified, “This is what the glory of the Lord looked like to me.” Can you imagine seeing that sight, in the middle of the day or night doesn’t matter!
Since I’m not a gemologist or geologist, I wasn’t sure what lapiz lazuli referred to. According to my Google search, lapiz lazuli is a mineral stone that makes beautiful jewelry and other fine things. It’s been associated with royalty, strength, courage, wisdom, friendship, and truth. How cool is it that God’s throne would be adorned with such a gem? Each of those words so powerfully describe God. It is a beautifully rich looking stone of deep blue and flecks of gold.
We won’t all receive such a vision from God, but we can still be humbled by his majesty. God has given us the open door have a relationship with himself, and he promises to never leave or abandon us. With the spirit inside, we have been given the same power that rose Jesus from the grave.
Let God blow your mind today with how grand and marvelous he is. Falling on your face like Ezekiel is not for the faint of heart!
Let’s pray. LORD, I can’t even begin to fathom everything about you. You are magnificent, you are holy, you are just, and you are loving. You are so many things and yet you love me. Sometimes I don’t feel worthy of that love. I am beyond grateful for how you have rescued me with your tender mercy. Help me to keep my eyes on you. I look forward to each moment we spend together. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
