Read Ecclesiastes 8:9-17
Solomon’s laments are familiar to us. We have more than likely at some time in our life wondered why the people who lie, cheat, and do wicked things are alive and well, and even prosperous. Yet, our reward for doing good and striving to be more like Jesus has left us being abused by society while stretching every cent to pay the bills.
The evil one’s plan is masterful. He’s trying to make the grass look greener over on the other side, the wicked side. If we are experiencing oppression for our faith or just hearing of others going through such ridicule, the lures of the evil one can be enticing. That’s why it’s so important to stand firmly on the truth of God’s word.
We are not experiencing a new phenomenon. Eve was tempted in the garden by evil. We know how that story ends! Every generation since has had its own struggle against evil. How are you being tempted in your life?
What wisdom does Solomon share with us about this ongoing problem? He said, “I know that those who fear God will be better off.” To fear God is to be in awe of God and his majesty. When we fear God, we recognize him for who he is, the powerful ruler and creator of all things. We can fear God and still acknowledge that he is loving, full of grace, merciful, generous, and entirely holy.
When we fear God, we know better than to anger him. That doesn’t mean we won’t sin. That’s impossible for us as humans. We recognize, however, that it’s foolish to act in ways that break God’s laws and satisfy our own selfish desires, not God’s will for our lives. While our minds may be clear that such behavior is foolish, we still do it. Why?
Perhaps we get carried away with “having fun” in this life. Solomon tells us having fun is what we’re here for; it’s the right thing to do. Personally, I don’t think Solomon was giving us the go ahead to get crazy and be intentionally sinful. Rather, he was encouraging us to stop worrying about what is fair and just in this world and leave that up to God. When we do that, we’re free to enjoy the life God has given us, appreciating all the blessings.
What are some of the blessings in your life that you can be thankful for? A roof over your head, food on the table, friends and family, a job that you love, a ministry that fits your gifts perfectly, a healthy bank account. What is it for you?
Let’s pray. Father God, thank you for all the blessings, big and small, that you share with me. Forgive me for not being more grateful for how you watch out for me. I sometimes feel like I’m invisible in this world, especially if I’m not surrounded by other believers. Use me to reach the people you want me to reach and nurture them well. It’s an easy task because I’m serving such a loving and gracious God. May I never anger you with my life choices. I want to honor you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
