How does God desire us to live? That’s the theme we’re investigating now. It seems our psalmist is asking the question, “who is good enough to worship God?” In other words, he’s asking God to set some standards or expectations.
God calls his people to be obedient. When we accept Jesus into our lives, we can’t help but be transformed. When the Spirit is alive and well inside us, we will crave to please God. These verses give us a glimpse into sinful behaviors we should be aware of.
God is not asking us to be perfect. What we see in this list are behaviors that are not helpful for building each other up or growing closer to God. What would the world look like if everyone followed this wisdom? Maybe we should start with our churches at least.
Sorry if that last comment ruffled any feathers. You may be thinking that church goers (not the same as true believers by the way) should have it more together. We are in church for a reason – to build our faith and grow. We need to hear these words just as much, if not more.
Did one of these moral standards speak louder to you than the others? Reflect on that for a bit.
To me, the gossip line struck a chord. “Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.” Even inside the church walls, I’ve seen relationships be ruined because of gossip or the spreading of rumors. I have felt personally the pain caused by such behavior of others.
It can be easy to get caught up in negative talk when it starts out tame or even shrouded with good intentions. We may never intend to hurt anyone with our comments. I’ve learned it’s always best to do a fact check, and then be careful about saying anything about other people, especially if you’re not involved in the situation.
I’m guilty of it, despite my attempts to guard my tongue. When I said “shrouded,” an example would be when you ask for prayer for someone and just happen to mention something that is hurtful or private. With all good intentions, you are sharing privileged information. Does that count as gossip?
For me, I want to live my life in a way that is pleasing to God. Maybe it’s because I’m a little older and wiser and am spending a lot more time in God’s Word, praying, and listening for God’s voice. When I was younger, I was a bit more carefree and less focused on such matters.
God’s intentions for us are not secret. He has given us passages like this. I’m sure we’ll just be skimming the surface of what it means to live as God desires over these next few days. God has also given us his Spirit to direct and lead us. When we tap into that power, we are given all sorts of abilities and insights we wouldn’t otherwise have.
Take some time to ask God to reveal to you other things you can do in your life of faith to help reflect his goodness and be more of the person he desires you to be. Don’t forget to listen for his response!
Let’s pray. Father, your goodness once again astounds me. You have always wanted what’s best for your children. Thank you for the example you set in Jesus. Help me to be more like him showing love to my neighbors. Give me your eyes to see the needs you want me to help supply. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
