Luke 22:66-71 – Are you the Messiah?

Read Luke 22:66-71

So in today’s reading we are witnesses to Jesus questioning by the council. This is an intermediary step we are not familiar with in our culture today. We are generally not questioned by the “church” before the “state.” But these are the disgruntled individuals who brought a claim against Jesus, the very claim that led to his arrest.

There had been men prior and there will be men after Jesus who claim to be the Messiah, or “somebody” as referenced in Acts 5. If truly from God, the power would be unleashed. We see the power of God released in Jesus. Jesus says, “But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand.”

I was never quite sure why Jesus didn’t come right out and say who he was. Whether he said it or not would be irrelevant to the outcome. But Jesus was always well spoken and thoughtful in his responses. This is a good model for us to follow. How many times do we lash out with the truth in a way that is hurtful, or with lies to cover up some pain or embarrassment? We need to be honest and thoughtful in all we say or do.

Who is Jesus to you? Is he your Messiah? In other words, do you claim him as your savior, redeemer, and friend? Is he the ruler or king over your life? That’s what a Messiah is. Jesus was the Messiah, our Messiah. We can see him for what he is and what he has done for us. Those involved in making history could not see and did not know how instrumental they were in the outcome which would affect so many.

How is God using you in his story? History is being made every day in big and small ways. You are part of that. The world is a better place because you are in it. Your contributions, big or small, make a difference. You may never know how a word or a smile from you may have changed a life.

Never underestimate the power of God living and working inside you. Don’t limit him by your own weakness. Let him use you and mold you into the creation he intended.

Let’s pray. Lord I am reminded today that you are my Messiah. You are the rescuer of mankind. You saw that I could not control my sinfulness apart from you. Even with your power inside me, I fall short. Evil is here in this world, and I am not immune. Forgive me. Thank you for giving me the awesome privilege to be part of your story. Use me today to help create happy endings for those around me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
