Luke 20:1-8 – What Authority Rules You?

Read Luke 20:1-8

I admit it. I giggled a little when I read today’s passage. I loved Jesus’ response, or non-response! I loved his attitude, didn’t you? Now, I feel a little bad about it — these men were religious leaders demanding respect, and I giggled. I’m totally in Jesus’ camp here, and it makes me angry when they try to corner Jesus.

Jesus doesn’t let them take the upper hand. He is always in control. That is exactly what we learn and teach in our marketing business.  Always ask questions, because the person asking the questions is the one in charge. Jesus does just that and models it beautifully. He knew the perfect question to ask.

And, he was respectful. Picture the scene, Jesus is preaching in the Temple, presumably days before he is to be killed, and people are still coming to him to be taught. Jesus doesn’t show disrespect for the religious leaders. I would have to believe Jesus is well aware their eyes are closed to who he is or they would be bowing down. Yet, he doesn’t call them out or he doesn’t rebuke them in any way. He simply asks a question for clarification. He uses their response to set up his own. Brilliant!

We know Jesus’ authority, and we know John was working for the kingdom, too. We have that knowledge through God’s word, as the truth reveals itself to us in this way. Our hearts and minds are open to receive. We hunger for more, just like the crowds listening to Jesus wanted more and more.

Yet, in our day and age, there are many authorities that seek our allegiance. We have our local, state and national governments, for instance. We have man made laws, in addition to the truths of the Bible, to consider. When we are asked to do something to obey man’s law that goes against our beliefs from God’s word, conflict arises. Some people don’t even think twice about either law and just make their own rules.

What rules your life? Or should I ask, who rules your life? Be honest. Think on this for a moment.

If your answer isn’t what you’d like it to be, what do you think you can do to get back on track? Pray. Talk to God and ask him to help you.

True happiness will come when you are living smack dab in the middle of God’s will. This message has come to me many times over the past couple of weeks, and I want to drive that home for you, too. If you think you know what’s best, and you try and try to achieve it, what happens when you get there? If God isn’t in agreement, you will only find disappointment. Why not avoid that and be SURE you are aligned with God’s will for you?

Follow God’s authority for your life. His plan is perfect.

Let’s pray. Father forgive me when I try to go it alone. I love the peace I find when I turn things over to you that are out of my control. There are some things I can take care of, but for everything else, I need you God. You help me to see clearly how best to proceed. I pray for your wisdom today as I’m walking through some stuff I wish wasn’t happening. I feel powerless in my own strength, but I know you will come through with all the wisdom and means. I pray with all my heart for a good resolution to these issues, a resolution that you have designed. I stand for you, God. You are my authority, my rock, my dear heavenly Father. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
