What does transfiguration mean? One definition suggests: “a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state.”
This is precisely what the select few of Jesus’ disciples got to witness firsthand in today’s reading. This has always been a reading that intrigued me. Imagine waking up from a nap only to see your friend in a changed form. The glory of the Lord was shining brightly. That is certainly something we don’t see every day.
Also, how did Peter know that it was Elijah and Moses? That has always puzzled me. Maybe they had pictures in their Bibles? I think it more likely God was imparting that wisdom.
Finally, we hear they were covered in a cloud. If that wasn’t frightening enough, they then heard the word of God speaking directly to them. If there had been any question at all of who Jesus was, at this moment it should have been crystal clear. The pronouncement left no doubt, the message spoke volumes. Listen to Jesus.
They probably thought to themselves, “that’s what we do, we hear him day in and day out preaching and teaching to all who will listen.” Precisely. They hear him. Do they “listen”? There’s a distinction, and we may fall into that trap ourselves.
We must be careful not to go through the motions in our faith journey. We need to truly listen for the voice of God to teach and direct us. We need to earnestly seek to hear a word from the Lord. He speaks to us today. We need to be listening for him.
When is the last time you heard the voice of God? If it has been a while, take some time to listen more intently, to quiet your own thoughts long enough for the voice of God to be heard over the din.
Let’s pray. Lord, forgive me for turning a deaf ear to you and not spending more time listening. There are so many voices that scream loudly. Help me to focus in on your voice so that I hear your voice first. May I take time to be still each day and wait on you. Help me discern my own thoughts and will from that which is from you. I want to obey the instruction you gave the disciples as I feel that was truly for me, too. Thank you for being patient with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
