Read 2 Kings 6:1-7

What do we have here in today’s reading? There must be something we shouldn’t miss in this simple story! Certainly, God used Elisha in more exciting ways than this, right? It’s a good reminder to us that God works in the little details, too.

Have you ever borrowed something from someone and then ruined it or lost it before you could return it? Remember the dread in having to confess they would never see their treasure again? In Elisha’s day, ax heads were likely made of iron, a highly treasured precious metal. This tool would have been very valuable to its owner not only because of its cost but its usefulness.

What happens next is unexpected in several ways. First, God’s power comes to the rescue of this tool! Second, a piece of wood is used to attract the heavy piece of iron that has fallen to the bottom of the Jordan River. Iron doesn’t just float or have any magnetic attraction to a piece of wood! God’s power was at work.

It’s a short passage to show that God is with us even in the insignificant, day-to-day activities. We don’t ever have to feel abandoned or alone. We can boldly ask for what we need help with.

We also see that Elisha is respected as leader by the other prophets. Elisha spends time with them, too, presumably nurturing them in their faithfulness. They desired a larger place to meet and spend time together. On the banks of the Jordan would have been a beautiful place to reflect and focus on God’s work.

When has God showed up for you in unexpected ways? Sometimes we get so busy we forget to look for God. I’d like to challenge you like I used to challenge leaders and children when I was Children’s Ministry director. We were to look for “God-sightings” every day. Maybe it was as simple as a sunset or a kind word. It always amazes me that when we look for God, we see him in so many different places. Even in the floating ax head!

Take some time today to look around. Where do you see God working in your family, your neighborhood, your church, your community? With a war raging in the Ukraine as I write these words, we have even heard stories of God working miracles there amidst all the chaos and conflict.

Let’s pray …
Lord, thank you for caring about even the insignificant parts of my life. While there are so many big things happening in our world right now, I want to direct all my prayer focus on those people who may not know you or the peace that comes with the assurance of eternal life with you. Use me in whatever way is possible to help people find you, your peace, and your provision. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
