“O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help.” (2 Chronicles 20:12)

While we might not be facing a mighty army set to attack us, we have plenty of struggles and times in life when we feel powerless. This memory verse gives us the perfect formula in those moments. When we cry out to God in faith, he will deliver us.

Context: This verse is part of King Jehoshaphat’s prayer to God in the face of a threat of war from neighboring nations. What a great example for us to see Jehoshaphat turn to the LORD, begging for guidance. The chapter goes on to tell how God revealed himself to the people of Judah in response to Jehoshaphat’s prayer and the worship of the people. All the people were overjoyed at the victory. It’s quite a story, and you can read more about God’s victory here.

Is there something in your life right now that is consuming your thoughts with worry? What giant are you facing that needs to be knocked down by God’s power? Try crying out to God like Jehoshaphat.

Even if your own personal life is flowing along without any bumps (lucky you), this is always a verse to keep handy to remind us where our strength comes from. Jehoshaphat knew the wisdom of Psalm 121:2, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” Think of it! Our God, the one who protects, sustains, and guides us, is the one he created all that exists.

It just makes sense to trust the Creator of the universe to handle our problems. This verse reminds us that we are powerless over our problems. That’s a truth that people working a twelve-step program learn right off the bat.

My husband, David and I were leaders in Celebrate Recovery years ago, and I learned about those steps then. The first two can really be applied to any hurt, habit, or hang-up. Step 1 was to admit we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, and that our lives had become unmanageable. Step 2 was believing our greater power (God) could restore us to sanity.

It starts with crying out to God in prayer. Tell God what you’re struggling with. Ask for his help. Trust that he will respond and show you the way. Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah prayed and fell on their faces, worshipping God even before he delivered them. That’s what we need to do, too.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord, I call upon you today to rule in my heart and mind. I acknowledge that I need you and want you to guide me in my life. I want to avoid falling prey to the sins of this world that distract me and keep me far from you. Help me stand strong against the lies of the world. I give you my problems and ask for you to help me work on them. I am powerless, Lord, and I trust you with my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
