We all do it. We walk around lugging our baggage behind us while we miss out on the life of freedom God desires for us. Why do we do it? Good question. I’ve got my theories, and I’d love to hear yours.
Our baggage may simply be the lies we’ve told ourselves so long we almost believe them, like we’re not good enough. Perhaps they are doubts we can’t face, sins we can’t forgive ourselves for, excuses for not taking action. Guilt may also be the baggage robbing you of your joy. But there is good news.
We don’t need to let our baggage define us. “But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” In other words, that baggage is eliminated when we allow God’s light into our lives. The blood Jesus shed cleanses us and makes us free.
Forgiveness can be elusive. We have a hard enough time forgiving ourselves, how are we supposed to forgive others? It helps when we remember that God has forgiven us first. He also has given us the capacity to forgive others. Realizing we’re forgiven sinners gives us something to bond over, doesn’t it? It all starts with confession.
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” Some may say, “Why do I have to confess, God already knows how I’ve messed up?” Yes, he does. But that’s not the point. When we confess our sins, we acknowledge that we, too, know we’ve messed up. That can be part of the healing process.
It can also be cleansing to confess your sins to a trusted friend and fellow believer. That was a powerful part of our Celebrate Recovery ministry. James 5:16 tells us, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” Praying for each other can be powerful in any instance. Imagine when a dear friend is helping you come to terms with sinful behavior that has been nagging at you, keeping you stuck, holding you back from the joy-filled life God intends for you!
Take some time today to think about what baggage you may be hauling with you. Is it time to give it to God so you can be cleansed and free?
Let’s pray. Father, forgive me for holding on to sinful behaviors that may almost feel comfortable now. I want to be cleansed and free so that I can live the life you have designed for me. Thank you that I can come to you and confess knowing you love me still. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
