“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.” (Romans 12:12)
As believers, we don’t just have confidence; we have “confident hope.” Instead of just hoping things work out, our confident hope gives us assurance because of what Jesus did for us. We don’t have to worry; we place our trust in Jesus, who always keeps his promises. Doesn’t having that kind of confident hope bring you peace and comfort, too?
Context (Romans 12): This verse is one of many gems in the 12th chapter of Romans talking about our lives as Christians. This verse comes right after Paul talks about being part of the Body of Christ, each of us having our own gifts to offer to the kingdom. Let this verse remind you of your allegiance as well as your community of faithful believers.
Jesus told us we would face trouble as his followers. Paul agrees but wants to give us some advice. Be “patient” in those circumstances. That sounds like good counsel, but when we’re stuck in our problems, isn’t it more likely we’ll want to put them behind us as soon as possible? Does that mean we’re impatient? Take a step back from your problems and remember who is walking alongside you. Ask for patience if you’re struggling with that.
The Bible talks about prayer a lot. A quick internet search suggests a different number depending on the translation. I haven’t counted myself, but hundreds of mentions should confirm the importance of prayer.
Prayer isn’t one of those things you do once and you’re done. Just like you would never have only one conversation with a friend. Does it help to think of prayer like a dialogue with God? That would suggest prayer is ongoing, something we “keep on” doing.
Paul talks about how we respond, and he says to rejoice. I can’t think of a better suggestion. Rejoicing indicates thanksgiving and praise. What better mindset to have as we face the troubles we’re bound to face. We have a lot to be thankful for as followers of Christ. Each new day is an adventure of blessings amidst the trials of life.
What is your favorite go-to way to rejoice? I like to jam out on praise music, whether I’m playing piano or listening to other worship leaders. Some people like to head into nature and marvel at God’s masterpieces all around. In whatever manner you rejoice in God, do that today and every day.
Let’s pray. Lord, my hope is in you and you alone. You are constant and your unfailing love covers me. I thank you for the confidence I have from trusting you with my life. May I never stop praising you for all your provisions. I never want to take you for granted. Protect me from times of temptation. Remind me to pray myself through those times. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
