Matthew 28:19-20 – Make Disciples

Jesus talking with this disciples

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Immediately after the resurrection, Jesus’ followers were still unsure of what their lives would look like without Jesus in it. But Jesus’ words called them into their mission, and we are called to the same assignment.  These verses are known as the “Great Commission” and set us up for our kingdom work.

Context (Matthew 28): Matthew’s account of the resurrection flows into a cover-up attempt by the chief priests and elders and concludes with what’s known as the “Great Commission.” We know from the other gospels that Jesus appeared to his followers a few times before ascending to heaven. During one of these visits, Jesus spoke these words, giving his disciples the job he expected them to do. Can you imagine receiving these marching orders directly from Jesus?

Because Jesus had the authority of heaven, he passed on this job to his closest followers. I can just imagine the various excuses that may have followed. Jesus was clear on the message, who was to hear the message, and, in case there was any fear, Jesus assured them they would not be alone. Jesus wasn’t going to give them the most important job of all without equipping them.

Little did the disciples realize that they had been being prepared and groomed for this mission all along. Everything that Jesus had taught them was the “curriculum” they would use in sharing with the world about Jesus. All they needed to do was tap into those memory banks of truth and open their mouths.

You may recall Jesus sent them out previously (in Luke 9) on a healing mission. They received the Holy Spirit’s power and ability to heal in Jesus’ name. They had already experienced a similar mission, so perhaps they had less pushbacks now.

Can you identify with the apprehension of sharing about Jesus with others? Remember we haven’t had all the face-to-face interaction with Jesus. Our times of getting to know Jesus are limited by what has been revealed to us during our prayer time and Bible reading. Can you even fathom the stories the disciples could tell? Stories connect people, and what better way to reach the lost and those in need of a Savior.

We have stories, too, about how Jesus has worked in our lives. Some people have a vivid memory of their conversion or filling of the Holy Spirit. Others feel like Jesus has always been a part of their lives. What are some of your favorite stories to share with others to introduce them to Jesus?

Lest there be any objections, Jesus thought of everything. He assures his disciples and us that he will be with us always. That’s assurance we can rely on. We don’t need to feel nervous or unsure about making disciples. We just need to do it.

single cross against sunset with sun burst by crossLet’s pray.  Lord, you gave us a mission to make disciples. Help me step out of my comfort zone, surrounded by other believers to find those who need to hear from you. Thank you for choosing me to touch those lives for you. Help me to be ever ready to take that leap of faith for you or share your truth with the right person ready to hear. Give me your shield of protection to deflect all attacks from the evil one.  Use me to help others see you are their only hope and way to salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
