Mark 9:30-50 – Jesus Teaches

Jesus talking with this disciples

Read Mark 9:30-50

Once again, there is quite a lot going on in our reading. Sometimes you’ll encounter passages that speak to you in a certain way that’s different from the next person. That’s what is so fantastic about God’s word. It meets us exactly where we are. What struck you in today’s readings?

This is the second time in Mark’s gospel where Jesus tells his disciples about his death. Each time he brings it up, he shares a little more information. However, the disciples are still left confused. Why do you think they were afraid to ask Jesus to explain?

Jesus was able to drop some real nuggets of truth, hopefully satisfying his desire to teach his disciples. Jesus was very intentional in what he was sharing with his followers. If we find ourselves feeling confused or unsure of what Jesus is telling us, you can imagine it wasn’t any different for his first audience.

Some of the key takeaways for me are:

    • The importance of servanthood. Not that I want to be first or receive great recognition for my life, but Jesus spoke highly of those who serve others. I know from experience the great sense of accomplishment and blessing I feel when I am serving the kingdom. It’s invigorating.
    • How precious children are in Jesus’ sight. I have always been drawn to teaching children; it’s my favorite way to serve. Each time I receive a hug from the girls at the orphanage, I feel the love of Jesus spilling out.
    • The power of Jesus’ name. Philippians 2:9-11 comes to mind where Paul teaches: “Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” There are plenty of Bible verses that speak to the power of Jesus’ name we can call on as we worship Him.
    • We can be salty and peaceful at the same time. By that, I imagine Jesus is telling us to be ready to spread our “seasoning” on others to appeal to their senses and spark their faith. These interactions aren’t meant to be pushy but loving, promising the peace that passes all understanding. When we trust Jesus, our hearts can feel peace even when chaos screams all around us.

I struggle with the whole idea of cutting off sinful body parts. I’m sure Jesus isn’t being literal here when he speaks of cutting off body parts that lead us to sin. Otherwise, I’m afraid we’d all be walking around without eyes and limbs. It speaks to how easily sin can infest our lives if we aren’t careful. Being aware of what serves us in our mission in life and what brings us down, tearing us away from Jesus, can help us decide what we need to prune away from our lives.

When you read this text, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what part of Jesus’ message is for you today. Taking in the whole teaching is great, but there may be something subtle to help guide you on your faith journey. It’s always good practice to ask for counsel.

little boy praying with eyes closedLet’s pray. Father, there is so much wisdom in this passage. I don’t want to miss the message you have for me today. I love getting to know you through the actions and words of Jesus. Help me to be mindful of your presence and direction for my mission. Serving you is such an honor and privilege. Forgive me for when I let distractions interfere with our time together. I want to keep my eyes on you and what you want to teach me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
