Mark 7:24-37 – Jesus is Present

Read Mark 7:24-37

Jesus encounters many people on his traveling ministry. He’s capturing the attention of everyone, not only those with Jewish heritage. Were you surprised by how Jesus interacted with the Gentile woman? A Gentile is any person who is not Jewish. He all but called her a dog!

That speaks to the separation that existed in those days between Jews and non-Jews. Gentiles would not have followed Jewish laws or traditions, and more than likely did not have any regard for God. Their devotion, if any, would be to many different gods of one sort or another. For her to be seeking Jesus was unexpected.

Even though Jesus explained his mission focus was for his people, the Jews, this woman persisted in her cry for help. Some might think she was simply a mother taking drastic measures for her daughter, but Jesus saw her heart. She had faith that Jesus could cure her child, no matter what her religious background. She was not wrong, and again, Jesus’ miracle happened at a distance. Jesus was present for her.

The next encounter is with a deaf-mute man whom everyone begged Jesus to heal. Why do you think Jesus took the man away from onlooking eyes? Could it be that making a muddy paste would seem distasteful? It’s more likely Jesus wanted to downplay his miraculous touch.

Can you imagine what a touch from Jesus meant for this man? Jesus was present in that moment. It would be difficult to keep such news to yourself. And isn’t it always the case when we’re told not to do something, the more we want to do it?

It seemed like everyone Jesus met had one sort of affliction or another. Jesus’ mission on earth was so much more than being a miracle worker. There’s a great worship song that speaks to Jesus’ character called Way Maker, written by Nigerian gospel singer, Sinach. You can listen to Mandisa’s version here: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNAAVPxjxbY)

Let your heart be touched and filled anew today. This same Jesus who cast out the demon from afar and opened ears and a mouth to speak is here for you, too. He is moving in our midst. He is working even when we cannot see.

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for your presence in my life. You bring such peace and contentment, despite the chaos going on around me. Resting in you is where I like to be. Thank you for opening my heart to you and your desires for me. Help me to be strong against opposition. I want to reflect you well in this world as I tell others of your great love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
