The rich man who approached Jesus showed great respect, calling him “Good Teacher” as he knelt to ask his question. The first takeaway for us to see is this man’s attitude. Do we approach Jesus with the same expectant awe?
The man’s appreciation soon turned to disappointment at Jesus’ response. For those with lots of money, Jesus’ words can be especially hard to swallow. For those living paycheck to paycheck, it can still be hard to fathom giving up everything to follow Jesus. It’s more than just possessions, isn’t it?
Our pastor featured this passage yesterday in his sermon about how we tend to limit God. He explained how this story points toward having idols in our lives that keep us distracted from God. Of course, a rich man would have a lot more accumulated “stuff” to distract, and that’s why Jesus said to get rid of it. Our possessions will never serve us, and the value of those items can be better utilized to help us serve others less fortunate.
When we can get rid of our distractions, we have the freedom to serve God more completely while relying on his provisions. The man was seeking eternal life, and so should we.
Jesus emphasized this matter of our hearts, our allegiance. Unfortunately, the rich are generally characterized as being greedy or power-hungry, unable to share. Sadly, that stereotype is not true for most of the wealthy people I personally know. Quite the opposite is often the case when those with an abundance share and provide hope for others. I especially see this played out in the donations received by La Ola Girls Home, the orphanage where I teach.
Jesus feels “genuine love” for all of us, whether we’re rich, poor, or somewhere in between. He longs for us to follow him. When we can clear away the distractions of life, we are able to see more clearly the direction Jesus desires for our lives.
The disciples struggled with Jesus’ words, as well. Anytime I question something, I try to remember verse 27, which says, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” God’s wisdom surpasses anything that we can even fathom. He can make anything happen. What God allows in the world and how he speaks to our hearts remain mysteries that often confound us.
We don’t need to go away sad like the rich man. God’s provision for us is ongoing when we place our trust in him. We don’t need to understand how it works, but know in our hearts that our reward awaits when we place our trust in Jesus.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, your promise of eternal life sustains me through difficult situations. Thank you for how you provide for and guide me each day. Your love for me and the abundant blessings you provide are steadfast and true. I am amazed at how you care for your creation. Forgive me for disrespecting your plan and intentions. Help me to see clearly the direction you have for me and get out of my own way. I never want to take you for granted or forget to show you my gratitude. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
