It is now Joshua’s turn to be in the spotlight. As we walk through the book of Joshua, we will see Joshua’s leadership style, God’s people entering the Promised Land, and lots of God sightings. I remember having children watching the world around them to find God. We called those God sightings. Maybe in a sunset, in a kind word from a sibling, or smile from a stranger. God is all around us.
Our text today gives us that assurance, too. While God was giving Joshua the encouragement he needed for his mission, we can take those promises as our own, too. “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” When we are forging new territory and trying something new in our own God mission, we can rely on God to be beside us.
Joshua is an interesting character. You may recall he was one of the “spies” who returned to Moses with an optimistic report after surveying the land (Numbers 14:6-9). He is remembered as a brilliant military leader and a strong spiritual influence. We will be encountering his story over the next number of days. You will note with significance that when God spoke, Joshua listened and obeyed.
Joshua’s mission is clear. He has been in Moses’ shadow for all these years, and now it’s his time to take the leadership role. What do you think he was feeling? The gamut of emotions had to be flowing. Yet he was being given a blessing from God. God said, “I will not fail you or abandon you.” When we try new things, our emotions can be all over the place. Being centered in God’s plan should definitely help us overcome some of our own nervousness.
God’s instructions are clear. He reminds Joshua about the “instruction manual” he has. “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” We have it, too! God’s word is our instruction manual for life. God’s messages in this book are the keys to our success in life.
Will we succeed at what we are doing because we read the Bible? You’ll have to answer that question for yourself. Is what you’re doing in alignment with Biblical teachings? Is your plan just that, “your” plan, or have you invited God into the decision? God’s plans will always work. Ours, on the other hand, may crash and burn. Take heed to these words of wisdom given to Joshua and meditate on God’s word for your own mission.
Let’s pray … Father God, I feel so much more confident knowing that you are by my side. When I start to feel afraid or unsure of what I am doing, help me to just stop, pray, and listen for your direction. Rather than be disappointed that my plan isn’t working, help me remember to invite you into the planning process. I want to be living the mission you have for me. Prepare my heart and move my feet. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
