Isaiah delivers a powerful yet beautiful prophecy. His message of hope for restoration came just in time. In the preceding 34 chapters, Isaiah had delivered a message of judgment on both Israel and Judah for rejecting God. These positive words would have been more than welcome.
We can’t help but get lost for a moment in the flowers’ blossoming display this time of year. In many locales, like where I’m from in the States, there is snow, snow, and more snow for as far as the eye can see. I even wore my snowflake shirt in their honor. I don’t miss a cold Christmas. I thought I would.
Did you recognize Jesus in Isaiah’s prophecy? I can’t imagine putting my hope in anything other than Jesus. This message would have sounded unattainable or unbelievable. Jesus is and was incredible. He would have been a stranger to Isaiah’s first audience.
What do we learn about Him? Jesus is our healer. As one of my all-time favorite Christmas carols, “O Holy Night” says, “all oppression shall cease.” For those followers of Christ who are under attack today, the words of healing power help bring courage to wait for God’s timing.
Have you ever thought about the “Highway to Holiness” that Isaiah spoke about? As I read his words, I couldn’t help but think about the narrow road Jesus talked about in Matthew 7:13-14. “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
Isaiah says people on that highway “walk in God’s ways.” What does that mean to you? Are you doing it? Jesus said it would be difficult. If you’re like me, you’re always striving to do a better job of walking in your God-given purpose. It’s far too easy to rely on excuses and let distractions complicate our relationship with God. Instead, we need to be action-takers and follow in Jesus’ footsteps to the best of our ability.
How wonderful to be redeemed and crowned with everlasting joy. Isaiah speaks of our salvation and our future with Jesus. Sorrow will have no place for those on the narrow road. No more worries or struggles. What could keep people from wanting to secure a future like that?
Advent is our time to prepare. We know that Jesus came to rescue the lost and draw us to Himself. Is there something that is holding you back or causing you fear or uncertainty? Isaiah says, “Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.’” Jesus is our Advent hope.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, help me listen for your voice and silence the noise of the world. Thank you for your promise to return and save us. While I wait, may I walk in your peace and help others to do the same. Help me to find the Highway to Holiness so that I can spend forever with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
