Isaiah 11:1-10 – Who Jesus Is

Read Isaiah 11:1-10

Advent is the perfect time to reflect on who Jesus is, and what the prophets said about him is so powerful. Isaiah could only imagine who God was describing. For us, we can see Jesus. And yet, there are so many parts of this prophecy that remain to be realized. We can learn so much about Jesus from this prophecy alone.

We learn about Jesus’ lineage, and we hear about how the Holy Spirit is moving. We see Jesus as a justice seeker, but whose powerful words can destroy the wicked. It’s comforting to know we have such a fierce warrior king fighting our battles. And yet, “He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.” He is right with God because he is God.

It was interesting to read about how all the animals that are now enemies or have predator/prey relationships will one day set aside their differences to live peaceably together. If the animals can do it, it seems probable that people will one day do the same. To live in a place or be protected by God from harm sounds appealing.

Not only will the animals be transformed, but how they relate to humans will change. Isaiah prophesies, “and a little child will lead them all.” When our Messiah reigns, we will hardly be able to recognize the world around us. Even children will have credentials and importance.

This is one of my favorite lines from this text: “the earth will be filled with people who know the Lord.” Can you imagine a world “filled” with people who know and love the Lord as we do? Just the thought of it makes me excited. I love being surrounded by fellow believers. I feel like I can be myself and not have to worry about offending anyone with my beliefs.

Thankfully, Jesus is our “banner of salvation.” He rescues and transforms so we never have to worry. We want to see Jesus lifted high, this banner flying for all to see. There is an oldie worship tune that speaks that message. You can listen to “We Want to See Jesus Lifted High” here. That brings back lots of memories. The guitar solo is great. I can still hear my husband playing it!

Salvation comes from Jesus. He’s our way to heaven. Isaiah knew it, but he hadn’t met his Redeemer yet. Isaiah was also waiting, but he had the privilege of speaking God’s word to the people. His message was just as much for us as it was for his first audience. We have all been waiting for Jesus, for the one who fulfills this prophecy and brings peace and joy to earth.

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Father God, open my ears to hear your message to me today. Thank you for loving me so much that you sent your son, Jesus. I long for the day when Jesus returns, and the world is full of believers living in peace with the animals, all bringing glory and praise to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
