As you read through Hebrews, it’s helpful to remember that the author is writing to Jews who have recently become followers of Christ. They would be very familiar with the history of their people and the Holy Scriptures that existed at that time. We’ll see lots of Old Testament references. For us, reading these references in the New Testament inspires us as Scripture points to itself over and over again.
In particular, we see here talk of Moses, the great hero of faith. Moses had done great things, but he was only a servant of God. Jesus, on the other hand, was the Redeemer and Creator, and his position of authority could not be equaled. Keeping that hierarchy straight is important, just like remembering that the universe does not hold the power; it is the Creator of that universe who deserves our worship and praise.
Verse 6 is brilliant. “But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.” There’s a lot to unpack in that one verse. How did it speak to you? It’s helpful to imagine all that exists as God’s house. After all, everything belongs to God. We belong to God when we trust Jesus. The author seems to suggest that our confident trust in God is crucial.
We have been warned to be careful not to fall away or lose faith like the Israelites did. Even though they witnessed one miracle after another in the wilderness, many did not reach the Promised Land. Woe to those in our day who have chosen to ignore God and go their own way. We all know plenty of people like that.
What are we supposed to do in addition to staying connected to God? We are to warn each other, supporting one another so that we don’t get sucked into the lies of the world. When we do that, we can all share in the promises Christ makes, sharing all that he has. What a reward it is to be able to share in all that belongs to Christ! Can you even wrap your mind around that?
The author must have known how hard it would be to follow Christ. Jesus even said that it wouldn’t be easy to be his followers. Without Jesus’ physical presence in the world, it is sometimes difficult to stay connected. Many have sacrificed all that they have because of their allegiance to Jesus. Even Jesus’ own disciples sought out the companionship of other believers for encouragement to stay grounded. Their times of worship while building Jesus’ church are recorded in God’s Word.
What’s cool is that as much as God loves us, he doesn’t tie us down and force us to be followers. He desires that everyone know him, but he only makes the offer. God doesn’t want us to rebel against him as the Israelites did in the wilderness. They grumbled and showed disrespect for all that God was providing. It’s a pattern that continues throughout history. There are rebels, and there are devoted ones. Which one are you?
Let’s pray. Thank you, Lord, for the reminder and encouragement your Word alone offers. I know how easy it is to let the troubles of the world and bountiful distractions keep me from enjoying all the benefits you provide to those who say “Yes!” to your call. Help me stand strong and surround me with other believers who will lift me up. Use me to encourage others today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
