Hebrews 10:1-18 – Old vs. New

Word of God open with lights beaming and cross with lights behind

Read Hebrews 10:1-18

It’s a big deal that Jesus is our High Priest. The preacher has kept with this topic for several chapters so that we would understand how Jesus has changed everything. While Jesus’ role ushers in the new covenant, he clarified that he wasn’t doing away with the old laws but simply bringing them up to date, given his role in our lives. But Jesus did cancel the old covenant promise, replacing it with a better promise.

In fact, the Holy Spirit declares here the message we heard a few verses ago. “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” We don’t have to worry about what laws God wants us to pay attention to because he will put them into our hearts and minds. We won’t be able to miss them, and hopefully we’ll be more obedient.

When we read through the Old Testament passages about the old sacrificial system, it seems hard for us to fathom such traditions. Yet, the old system had its place and purpose. I was surprised to read that God didn’t mean for the animal sacrifice and yearly reminder to be permanent. God intended that Jesus would one day be the perfect sacrifice.

Nonetheless, it’s good to remember that the sacrificial system was ordained in the law of Moses. Those details about what to sacrifice when and by whom are only a portion of the law of Moses that God’s people follow. Aside from the sacrificial elements, the ancient laws were given for our own good, to help us in our relationship with others and with God.

Was there a verse or a teaching in this reading that spoke to you? For me, it’s verse 10 which seems to summarize this whole section in the sermon about sacrifices and Jesus role. “For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.”

Any time I’m told in Scripture that something is God’s will, I perk up and listen. As a child of God, I am always focused on living my life consistent with God’s will. God wants me to be holy, and Jesus is the way that happens. I’m going to reflect on that today.

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for shedding your blood for me. Your power is revealed in that this sacrifice was a once and done event. Your pain and agony will be forever remembered and celebrated because of how you draw your people to you. Thank you for redeeming me and setting me free from sin. I want to walk forever in your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
