Ezekiel 41:1-26 – Even Palm Trees

Read Ezekiel 41:1-26

I have always loved palm trees. Growing up in Iowa I didn’t see many unless I was on a trip to a tropical paradise. I must admit I was a bit surprised to see that palm trees were specifically part of this vision of God’s new temple. He must like them, too! God loves all of his creation, but not all trees are singled out to adorn the walls and inner sanctuary.

More and more details are revealed in this reading, but it was the palm trees that spoke to me. What would be the significance? Again, we can marvel at how God thought of everything to help his people succeed at worshipping him, all the way down to the palm tree decorations.

Would the people receiving Ezekiel’s vision from God take action? Would they finally rise to the occasion and no longer be disobedient? God was taking great care to set his people up for success with such a beautiful temple to draw them into his presence.

Palm trees aren’t new to Biblical texts. Solomon’s temple was described as having palm trees, too. You can find those references in 1 Kings 6 and 7. Palm branches were gathered for constructing the shelters during the Festival of Booths. Other Bible references that may come to mind include Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. In church, we call that day Palm Sunday and have great fun waving our palm branches to the music during those services.

Palms are worshipful, offer protection, and signify victory. What a great symbol to include in the temple! Palm trees stand strong against tropical storms. Think about how God offers us protection against the storms of life and offers us victory in the promise of resurrection.

Think about a difficult time you’ve encountered in your life. Isn’t going through those trials so much easier when you have God by your side?

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. LORD, I thank you for each time you reveal yourself to me to gently remind me you are there. Going through the storms of life is bearable with you standing strong, leading the way, holding me up, and loving me through each new day. Forgive me for my doubting heart. Help me to see clearly your path for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
