Read Ezekiel 39:1-24
The episode of oracles involving Gog concludes here with God’s victory. However, Gog and Magog are mentioned again in Revelation 20. I find it curious that such a mystery exists around who Gog and Magog actually are. I think that’s because they are not real people but symbolic representations of something much bigger than two individuals or one individual and it’s land.
The mind can be boggled when you let yourself explore the vastness of God and his plans for his people. Ezekiel and his audience would have been confused, too, since scholars and teachers cannot concur on Gog’s identity.
The consensus, as I mentioned previously, is that God’s message is simply showing what will happen to evil in this world. Gog and Magog then represent the whole evil world fighting against God and his truth.
God has spoken through other Old Testament prophets telling of how he’ll be handling his foes in the future. This is just another one of those gory yet hopeful texts. We know God is paying attention. He knew what was going to happen long before it happened, and some of this we may have yet to see.
There is nothing better than a Biblical prophecy because you know its trustworthy. God means what he says. He is faithful and true. It’s an honor to be able to sit with our vantage point on this side of history. We have the privilege of seeing how so many prophecies have already come to pass. We’re able to watch history unfold knowing that God is control. The final victory will be his.
I’m not going to focus on all the details of how God’s fury plays out against evil. Instead, I want to focus on the good, on God’s promises, on his majesty, on making the most of each moment he has given me to enjoy this place and time.
How are you making God more of a priority in your life? Ever since I started being more intentional about my time with God, the more confident and peaceful I feel. The evil one doesn’t like that much, but I claim God’s victory when I feel weak. It’s my prayer for you to feel God’s peace in your life.
Let’s pray. LORD, I know there are battles between good and evil going on all around me. It’s probably a very good thing I can’t see them, or I’d be terrified. Despite all that, I know that you are shielding me from harm. Thank you for drawing me in, wanting to show me more of you through your word. Open my eyes to the truth and give me discernment to recognize the lies of the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
