Do you remember the book “Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss? I have always had a loose association between that story and the story of these people left behind when Moses went up to the mountain. Yet, I’ve always been surprised that Aaron fell victim so quickly to the people’s demands. I suppose his faith wasn’t secure enough to hold on and trust his brother’s safe return.
We don’t see any sort of cautioning by Aaron, do we? He just started doing what the people wanted. He must have been a people pleaser. He made them a god fashioned out of their treasures. The people needed something tangible to follow. In my mind, our God is our treasure, he’s not made from them.
So what does that say about us? We are always looking for instant gratification. It’s hard to wait on God. It may seem our prayers often go unanswered. How do we handle that? Do we look for ways to rush God? Certainly, we often rush past him and hope he catches up. Think about how silly that is? When we chastise the Israelites for wanting a god to follow, we often do the exact same thing.
So how can we be more patient? What can we change in our lives to be able to wait? Are you waiting on God right now for something to happen in your life?
Take a moment to reflect on what’s happening now in your life and how you are responding. Are you pacing or are you sitting back in faith?
Let’s pray. Lord, I know how hard it is to wait on your timing. Yet your timing is perfect. Help me when I am frantic in a situation I cannot change. Help me to rely on you at all times. Forgive me when I rush past and try to fix things my way. Thank you for the peace you give me when I ask. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
