Genesis 14:17-24 – Be a Blessing

Read Genesis 14:17-24

Again we see Abram in a favorable light. There is no greed in his heart. He has undoubtedly acquired a lot of goods through the rescue of Lot, yet he doesn’t want to keep them for himself. That takes a lot of inner strength to be such a giver. He did give a tenth to King Melchizedek as payment. That was a traditional gesture of even some pagan religions. Abram didn’t want the recognition or have anyone say his wealth was due to someone else’s actions. Abram’s blessing and riches were from God.

Abram was humble. Abram was giving. He wanted to make sure his allies were also taken care of. If you have ever had a windfall or received a good sum of money for your work or some other reason, you know the first thing we tend to do is think, “how can I spend this?”  Maybe the answer is to be faithful and give it away or save it for a rainy day. But the human inclination is to splurge a little first. Continue reading “Genesis 14:17-24 – Be a Blessing”

Genesis 14:1-16 – To the Rescue

Read Genesis 14:1-16

War broke out in the land, and I understand that rivalries among kings of the day were common. Most cities had their own kings. When a city was conquered, the victorious king was paid tribute. Lot and his household got in the way of a longstanding feud it seems, and the king in power seized him. Now Lot faced torture and surely death. Thankfully one of his men got away and had the smarts to go tell Uncle Abram.

We learn more about Abram’s character in today’s reading. He was full of mercy and he was prepared. He was not afraid to be bold and stand up against the evil authority who had taken his nephew. His family devotion was stronger than any hard feelings he may have had for Lot’s choice in the land deal. There was no delay on Abram’s part, he heard the news and he moved. He called together his men, 318 had been born into his household. They had obviously been prepared for battle or at least security duty. They were devoted to Abram. With God’s strength they prevailed and Lot and his family, household and all possessions were recovered.

King Kedolaomer’s army must have been taken by surprise when Abram’s men caught up with them and attacked at night. And the fear of God was put into Kedolaomer’s army as they fled into the hills. When God is at work, it is good to stand back and watch with amazement and awe.

Do you think that Lot knew Abram would come to rescue him? Do you have someone in your life who you can always count on to get you out of a jam? When something bad happens, who do you call on? It’s good to have friends and family nearby to help. But what happens if you are alone with nobody to rescue you? No matter what, we always have a Heavenly Father standing by ready to protect and defend.

Listen to this great song, Came to My Rescue.

There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. He is always watching over us. He does “allow” evil in this world, but he will provide protection. Often we pray for safety and provision. Those are gifts God enjoys giving us when we ask. Sometimes we forget to ask.

We have a choice. We can wallow in our own self-doubt, angst, loneliness, and frustration, or we can turn to God and let him cleanse us. Those are all feelings we shouldn’t allow to overtake us. The evil one is crafty. We see in our story how he uses people, even those in authority, to harm others and control them. God is the only one to whom we should yield the control of our lives.

Are you still trying to take charge of your life or are you ready to let go and let God be in control?

Let’s pray. Lord, I am humbled that you are ready to rescue me when I fall. As the song says, “My whole life I place in your hands, God of mercy, humbled I bow down, in your presence, at your throne.” I imagine myself in your presence and all my fears, troubles, insecurities vanish. Thank you for the confidence, the joy, the opportunity to serve you. May my life be a blessing to you and to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Genesis 13:1-18 – Find a Solution

Read Genesis 13:1-18

They had too much stuff to stay together so they had to come up with a solution. They were family and didn’t want their “help” to continue to bicker and fight over the land. Abram showed a lot of integrity in this agreement. Being older, he could have taken first dibs on the land. Instead, he gave Lot first choice. Abram could have been cheated in this transaction, but again, he was gracious. This gives us a good model to follow when we run into family squabbles that could divide or cause friction.

Lot, on the other hand, chose the best for himself, even if that put him near the sinful city of Sodom. It’s not clear if he thought all about Abram. That speaks of Lot’s character a little bit. Again, the family dynamics are clear. Someone always has to take the high road, so to speak, to keep things harmonious. Continue reading “Genesis 13:1-18 – Find a Solution”

Genesis 12:10-20 – My Way

Read Genesis 12:10-20

Did Abram question God when famine struck the land he was just led to by God? No. But he did take his wife, Sarai to Egypt to wait it out. I’m not sure he thought through this decision all that well.  So what happened when Abram realized his wife was so beautiful that his  own life would be in danger as her husband? Abram stopped trusting God at the moment, and he asked Sarai to lie about her identity. Well, it wasn’t a complete lie because she was his half-sister, but clearly his wife, too. She was not “available.”

Didn’t Abram believe God would protect them? Maybe the thought didn’t cross his mind? We might be guilty of that, too. When obstacles get in our way we often try to use our own means and strength to overcome them. Rather, we should rely on God to provide our solution. Especially when we are sure we are on the path God intends for us. We need to be confident that God has it all worked out. But it’s easy to fall into the trap of doubt. The evil one is counting on it. Continue reading “Genesis 12:10-20 – My Way”

Genesis 12:1-9 – Time to Go

Read Genesis 12:1-9

In our last reading, we heard that Abram and his wife, along with his father and nephew, Lot had left to settle in Harran. That was just the first step. Now God is about to use Abram in a mighty way! The word Abram received from God in today’s reading must have rocked his world. Time to go again. Leave your father and all that is familiar, God said, and I will bless you. And Abram was, in turn, to be a blessing on all peoples. What do you think Abram thought? Do you think his wife, Sarai, had anything to say about it?

Certainly, in our day and age. we are not surprised by people packing up their belongings and moving away. For someone like me who lived in the exact same house for my whole childhood, it could seem strange, but I have moved plenty since, including a move abroad! Listening for a word from God is always a confirmation that the move is what God wants. God blesses what he approves of. Continue reading “Genesis 12:1-9 – Time to Go”
