We don’t always get timestamps in our Bible accounts, but here we do. Today’s reading happens the day after Paul tried to talk reason to the angry Jews. Remember how the commander rescued him and put him in the fortress? The people’s anger wouldn’t just dissipate, but it seemed to have escalated. At least for this group who have made an oath not to eat or drink until they kill Paul. It seems crazy to me. They had quite a plan. But God had his angels in place to prevent it getting in the way of his plan. God’s plans will always trump the enemy’s plans.
Thankfully Paul was in protective custody which allowed family members to visit and bring food and other amenities. It seems those guarding him were also on his side. They were a bit perplexed at why these people were so full of anger and hatred toward Paul.
Have you ever felt like you had a target on your back? Maybe you had folks who didn’t like you, who bullied you and made you feel afraid. Chances are there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the way in your story, too.
What we should really take away here is that when we are doing God’s will, mountains move. Paul was probably chuckling to himself as he rode along with 270+ men keeping him safe as he left that night, before the ambush, to arrive safely before Governor Felix. That’s a lot of men to protect one prisoner. A prisoner. A Roman citizen.
It’s great to have a front row seat to watch God’s hand at work in his people. David and I have been blessed to find a brand new congregation here in Mexico. God led us to this community of believers. Each week our faithful leadership team relies on God’s provision, and each week we have a new place to hold our gatherings.
We are a church on the move. It feels so much like the early church, and we are adopting a lot of those traditions. God is moving, too, and it is so exhilarating to be part of something like this. Perhaps this is why we moved to Mexico. I know I want to be more faithful than ever to listen to God’s plan for us. I know Satan is trembling for what is about to happen.
God is moving in your life, too. Look around. You will find his mighty hand orchestrating something to bring his glory to light. Be still and listen for God’s voice to give you your marching orders. Paul knew what was in store for him. We should be as confident God has a job for us, too. God’s protection will come when the enemy lurks.
Let’s pray. Lord, I have so much joy inside for how you are working in my life. Each day I wake with a new vibrancy. Despite the circumstances that face me now and challenge me, I know you are there beside to give me wisdom and assurance. Guide me and use the situation I am in to bring you glory. May I touch someone’s heart today. Help me not to get overly stressed or lose sight of you. You are my king, my protector, my savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
