Read Jeremiah 23:5-6

When I think of the people alive at the time of Jesus’ birth, I can only imagine this prophetic word would have brought comfort. However, based on these words, the people were expecting a great warrior king that would come and restore peace and safety. The world Jesus was born into was full of evil and corruption. God’s people lived in fear and needed a Savior. They just didn’t know their Savior would look like Jesus.

Jesus was that “righteous descendant from King David’s line.” Matthew’s gospel does a great job of revealing that genealogy. This wise king, Jesus, would save the people and return them to safety. How Jesus would do this was not with a mighty sword or battle as the people expected. Although, the battles being fought in the unseen realm are likely greater than we can possibly imagine.

For us today, this promise still holds true. Now, Jesus is reigning with wisdom from his throne in heaven. We will one day be able to see him in all his glory. In that day, we will all be saved. Generations earlier, the prophet Isaiah had said these words. “Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken!” (Isaiah 40:5) Whether in heaven or on earth, we will one day be in the presence of the LORD.

This promise is especially appropriate for us in Advent. We can marvel at how God has cared for his people and shown his faithfulness across the pages of history. Rather than reveal his majesty, Jesus’ coming was wrapped in humility. Think of the manger. Think of the donkey marching into Jerusalem. Think of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. The faithfulness of God was always leading the way. Jesus was the perfect example for us in living godly lives.

Did you notice how this prophecy identifies Jesus? It says his name will be “The Lord Is Our Righteousness.” Jesus is righteous. He never sinned. He is the LORD, and his is “our” righteousness. Ours. He gives it to us. There is nothing we can do to earn it. Like grace, it is a gift we don’t deserve. It depends only on God’s love, which we know is limitless.

Psalm 36:5 gives us a beautiful picture to focus on today. “Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.” Our God, our righteousness, our wise King.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord I come to you with joy and expectation for what you are about to do. You have promised Jesus will return, and I wait with expectation and hope that I will be able to witness this in my lifetime. My heart overflows with gratitude for your righteousness, faithfulness, and loving kindness. Thank you for my life and the gifts you have given me. In Jesus’ name. Amen
