Read Hebrews 2:10-18
Jesus is the Son of God, but we are also God’s children. “So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father.” We are chosen to be made holy. Let that sink in for just a moment. As children of God, we are recognized as brothers and sisters to Christ.
Old Testament prophecy comes alive as Jesus quoted the Psalms and Isaiah. He said to God: “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.”
What does it feel like to be Jesus’ brother or sister? What an inheritance we have been given access to. To be made holy by Jesus to do God’s work is also such an honor. Many overlook this opportunity to be used by God. How is the holiness of God being displayed in your life?
The lyrics to Hillsong’s praise song, “Who You Say I Am”, powerfully testify to being a child of God. We are set free when Jesus chooses us! You don’t have to ever worry about not fitting in or being a little “different.” There’s a perfect place for you in our Father’s house! Proclaim it! Receive it!
We have been redeemed through Jesus’ death and resurrection. What does that mean to you? Have you ever had to give up something you held dear for the benefit of someone else? We can only imagine the price Jesus paid. Jesus sacrificed his life to save ours.
In verse 10, it says, “And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader.” I’m troubled by the “only right” as it relates to Jesus’ suffering. It’s as if Jesus needed that suffering, and it was “right” that he be tortured and killed. Right? I’d agree with “necessary,” but “right” seems to make it was a positive thing. But without the excruciating death, our salvation would not be possible.
The good news is that by his action, Jesus broke the power of death when he died on the cross. “Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.” Because of that sacrifice, as chosen ones we are free to have everlasting life. To us, broken sinners, that is quite a gift.
Remember that no matter what craziness is going on in your life right now, this is temporary! We have an inheritance in heaven waiting for us when we put our trust in Jesus. Do you trust the one who chose you and is making your holy? Remember, Jesus understands. “Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.”
Let’s pray. Lord, there are things in this world spiraling out of control. It’s frightening how often my faith is tested. Calm my fears and help me to stand strong against the enemy. Thank you for each day you give me, drawing me to yourself and clothing me with your holiness. Bless my interactions this day so that people will see you at work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
