Solomon is not going to be a lonely king. He has a lot of officials to help him with the tasks facing him as he moves the people of God forward in history. You may recognize some names from David’s regime. He is also surrounding himself with priests to give him Godly feedback and guidance.
I often wonder why the Bible is full of lists like this. Names representing individuals forever given remembrance. Beyond this mention, will we see these names again? Possibly. I’m just marveling at the extent to which Solomon is surrounding himself. As I understand it, he is also systematizing it a bit more than his father. We see a bit of the Egyptian influence he no doubt has gotten from his Egyptian wife.
What else do you notice? The complexity and sophisticated structure is admirable. But then Solomon did ask God for wisdom. By appointing governors of the different tribal lands, he will have additional help in keeping the peace. These governors are also going to take turns feeding Solomon’s vast household.
We can sit in wonder at the extent of Solomon’s kingdom. He realized that he needed to put systems in place to make sure it ran efficiently. We often do the same in our own spheres of influence. What are some of the systems you have in place?
To me, a system is how you create order to a situation or circumstance. If you need to get the kids to school every day before 8 a.m., then you figure out the “system” to make that happen. It will no doubt include alarm clocks, prepared meals, and transportation. When one of those pieces is out of whack, the whole system suffers.
We have systems for a lot of things to make our lives run smoothly. In Solomon’s case, he was involving other people in areas most needed. We often do that, too. I heard once that it “takes a village” to raise a child. Think of it – there are teachers, babysitters, carpool moms, coaches, etc. You are probably part of somebody else’s “system” and don’t even realize it!
If things feel a little chaotic in your life, take some time to reflect on what type of “system” you might employ to make life a little easier. There is always a learning curve to anything new we add to our lives, so be patient. Ask God to show you who he wants to be part of your system.

Lord, I am so grateful for how you have blessed me in my life. Thank you for each of the precious people I see in my “system.” Continue to bring people into my life that I can bless in their system. Give me and my loved ones the wisdom to systematize our lives in a way that honors you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
