I knew there was something fishy going on in bringing Absalom back to Jerusalem. Absalom’s agenda now seems to be rebellion against his father, the king. He is quietly building his following without drawing too much attention from the king’s authorities.
I would have thought King David would have noticed a decline in the number of cases he was hearing. Why would he have failed to observe such a trend? I know it must get tiring to hear and rule on such things, day in and day out. Perhaps he was happy for the reprieve in hearing sob stories and territory disputes.
Absalom’s trickery involving those with issues needing the king’s judgment was quite something. Sadly, his message was not truthful. Yet, who would dare question a king’s son? From the sounds of it, Absalom is quite charming in his demeanor. I’m sure we’ve all encountered a charmer or two!
Was Absalom wrong to divert the people’s attention toward himself? What did he have that put him in better favor than King David? If nothing else, Absalom was wrong because he lied and deceived. Not only to the people, but he deceived his own father. While we hear about Absalom’s sacrifices, it appears that was only a diversion to strengthen his rebellion.
Can you recall a time in your own life when you rebelled against something? Maybe it was driving the speed limit. Maybe it was listening to a parent or teacher’s advice. Whatever it was, it was likely a selfish move. Generally, we react negatively toward authority when we feel our freedom has been infringed. We are seeing a lot more “hurt feelings” in our world today.
Take some time today to think about a situation that you feel strongly about. How can you use your gifts and abilities to improve the situation? Ask God to show you the way rather than rebel in a way that is not helpful.
Let’s pray …
Lord, there are so many values that I feel strongly about defending. I also tend to get a bit defensive when my own credibility or integrity is challenged. I can think of several situations that are brewing that need to be resolved. Lord give me wisdom to do the right thing and shine with your light. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
