Isaiah calls it out plain as day. “Look, a righteous king is coming!” Having suffered under power hungry kings who were not focused on God’s will, the idea of a righteous king must sound amazing. Bad things will befall Judah, but they can look forward to the day when God sends Jesus, a king unlike any other king. One who promises to rule with justice.
“In that day” we hear some remarkable things will happen. Evil will be exposed as evil. We can look around today and see how evil is infiltrating our world on many levels. It’s like people are blind to it and even attracted to it. It’s alarming really. Yet this phenomenon is nothing new. Even when Jesus came the first time, the people didn’t recognize him, and evil was allowed to play a role in his death. While we don’t understand, we know God has it under his control.
So, too, with the calamities of our world today. Readings from the Old Testament like we have been reading can really give us hope for tomorrow. We can see the progression of God’s story over the ages. God is always in control despite the trials and painful situations.
I love this promise that “everyone who has eyes will be able to see the truth, and everyone who has ears will be able to hear it.” Our eyes and ears need to be focused in the right direction. But this promise is inclusive of “everyone.” The truth has been set before us. When we think of truth, we should be thinking of Jesus.
Truth is far more than a moral guide. In John 14:6, Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” Jesus didn’t say He would show us or teach us the truth. Jesus is the truth; truth personified! I remember having a hard time wrapping my head around that the first time I heard it. It was like an “a-ha” moment. Jesus is the source of all truth.
Why do we continue in our complacency? Do we think that we have lots of time to get it right? Are we just too busy putting out the fires of life to be thinking about the truth and what it means for us? When the lure of the comforts of the world is so great, I’d like to say it’s not our fault. But we have choices. We can decide how we spend our time, what books we read, what shows we watch. We can often have false security in the “things” around us. But it’s all temporary. Where should we be placing our allegiance? In the one who brings peace and freedom.
Let’s pray … Lord, I do put my trust in you. Forgive me for those times that I question what’s happening and why. Somethings are not meant for me to know. I ask you to shine through me and use me to bring hope to this world. Thank you for equipping me with the gifts you have. I now ask for you to introduce me to those who need this direction from you. In Jesus’ name.
