Deuteronomy 11:8-32 – Count Your Blessings

Read Deuteronomy 11:8-32

Moses does a great job again of recapping what’s important now as the people get ready to claim their new home. He wants them to focus on the blessings. “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today.” Moses has been giving a beautiful speech over the last chapters to prepare his people for their new reality. He is speaking for God to the Israelites, but there is wisdom for us, too.

Likewise, we can get lost in our own lives, stuck in fear or worry, busy with tasks, or simply just going through the motions of life. We can let Moses’ words bring us some comfort and direction. “But be careful. Don’t let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the Lord and serve and worship other gods.” What may be deceiving us today may look different than those challenges for the Israelites, but the message is the same.

Be careful. Count your blessings. Remember who is in control of your life. Don’t rely on other “gods” or promises that are not from our Heavenly Father. Seek discernment. “Commit yourselves wholeheartedly” to God. Rewards will come from God when we truly seek his will for our lives.

How do we do it? How should we act? “Show love to the Lord your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him.” When our path or direction doesn’t seem clear, when we feel lost or alone, or maybe we’re just off track and can’t find our way back, hold tightly to God. Cry out to God and let him know what you’re struggling with. He already knows, but when you can verbalize it, God’s rescue becomes all the more real and powerful. We need to be ready to declare our dependence on God. He stands by ready to help us in our weakness.

Remember, all good things come from God the Father. James 1:17 says, “Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.”  If it’s not good, it’s probably not from God. Blessings are all around us. When you count your blessings, do you give God the credit?

Takes some time today to talk with God about your concerns and fears, as well as your joys and celebrations. Reassess how you are responding to his goodness.

Let’s pray … Lord, forgive me for rushing around frantically without coming to you for help. Help me to realize my own frailties and rely on your strength in those situations. Thank you for rescuing me time and time again from myself and my selfish ways. Continue to guard my tongue and my steps as I navigate through this day. Thank you for each blessing you have given me. My heart is overflowing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
