If you’re an American, this phrase is even on your money. “In God We Trust.” The verse of the day is verse 26 which reads: “Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice comes from the Lord.” It’s not a bad thing to seek favor from the ruler, whether it be the sheriff, the governor, or even the president. It’s okay to want to be an upstanding citizen and not break any rules.
Yet, not many of us have an audience, much less a friendship, but those folks. For me personally, I do know one of the presidential candidates for the upcoming Presidential election in the United States. But, even if he were in the White House, I’m not certain I would be able to present my case before him. There would be a lot of hoops to jump through and red tape to navigate. Those officials or “rulers” might be able to help, but I am sure that God’s help will be perfect and timely. God knows exactly what I need before I even ask.
I love the promise of Psalm 121:1-2, “I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” Yes! Exactly! My help comes from the Lord. He is ready to bring justice and provision. Men will fail. God will not. Psalm 119:8-9 is also right on point. “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.”
You may have heard or even said, “It’s not what you know but who you know.” That can be true. It’s good to have associations and acquaintances here on earth. They can help you make things happen. But people can be unreliable. They can get busy. They can be too focused on their own needs to remember yours. God is never too busy. He is forever faithful.
Are you going through a struggle or hard time right now? If it’s smooth sailing, think of a time when you were in a bit of a pickle. Who are you (or did you) turn to for help? Are you still feeling lost and unsure? Remember Jesus is your friend, too. Jesus holds your life now and your destiny in this world and the next in his hands. His approval and blessing are far more important than anyone else’s, no matter how powerful they might be. Knowing God and walking with him will do more for you in all parts of life. Seek, obey, and trust Jesus today.
Let’s pray … Lord, I come to you a hot mess with all kinds of concerns. I don’t know which way to turn, except to turn to you. Help me sort all of this out. Give me the confidence I need. Help me to realize how talented you have made me and how able I am with you by my side. May I not dwell on failure or fears of the same. May your peace wash over me and fill me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
