When you know a Bible story because you have read it, watched it on the big screen (The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston), taught it in Sunday School for years, and read it some more…it can be hard to read it fresh. If this is your first time through the book of Exodus, fantastic! I’m so glad to have you here. But, if you’re like me, I challenge you to read as if it’s the first time. Allow God to show you something new.
That’s really my hope in writing these devotionals. As I am reading through the passages and reflecting on what they mean to me, I’m doing my best not to look ahead. The story will never change, but how it speaks to me can and will. If I let it. With all that being said, was there something that jumped out at you today?
For me, I wondered what it was that Moses’ mother saw in him that made her believe he was a “special baby.” Don’t we all look at our children and see them as “special?” We haven’t heard about any angelic visit telling her her son would be special. Yet, she knew. A mother’s intuition perhaps.
Being a mother in those days must have been so hard, especially if you had given birth to a son. I wonder what other solutions moms found to keep their baby boys safe. The basket in the river was a genius plan. I don’t think I would have thought to do that. There weren’t any DIY (do it yourself) videos out there to know how to waterproof a basket. This lady was resourceful.
That’s what we need to be in life. Resourceful. We are given many resources to use, to be thankful for, and to share. We need to be good stewards of what we are given. So many times, we overlook the resource and forget to be grateful. Think of oxygen. God gave this gift to all of us, and it is abundant on our planet. We need it to live. It is a critical resource. Do we take it for granted?
What are some other resources? Time, money, health, knowledge, relationships, etc. Let me know what comes to mind for you. How are you caring for all of the resources you have been given? Are you storing them up for a rainy day, are you using them wisely, or are you squandering them away? We should take a cue from Moses’ mother and be resourceful when we have a situation that needs handling.
Didn’t you love how God orchestrated this whole thing? Moses’ mother got to rear him after all! That had to be God! She let Moses go with hopes of saving him. Before she knew it, he came back to her for nursing and care. Ultimately, Moses would be adopted by the Pharoah’s own daughter, but how wonderful! His mother’s plan had worked (with the help of God). Moses would be safe and have a secure future! Isn’t that what we as parents want for our children?
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for giving us the resources we need. Help me to be a good steward of what you have given me. May I use every gift and give glory to you. Use me to further the kingdom. Use my words, my writing, my singing, my mentoring, and my leadership. I am nothing without you, God. But with you, I have everything that I need. Help me to crush my limiting beliefs and trust you completely. May I be like Moses’ mother and let go so you can make a beautiful ending to my story. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
