We read about Abraham’s faith in Genesis (chapters 15-22) several months ago. You can look back to those reflections for reference. Abraham was a true hero of faith. He set a great example for all of us to follow. We have so many stories of how he trusted God no matter what.
Abraham overcame so many obstacles because of his faith. Unwavering faith. He didn’t wait for the situation to match God’s promise to be faithful. He trusted in God’s promise from the moment it was uttered. Are we as trusting? Do we cling to God’s promises with as much intensity and devotion?
Paul wanted the Romans (and now us) to know that faith is the key. It’s not what we do or how we do it. “[P]eople are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.” Period. Faith in God is trusting in his promises. For many, that is difficult because they cannot see God. Putting trust in the unknown can be difficult. That’s why we have heroes of faith like Abraham to help us overcome our own obstacles.
It’s not for us to know how God will fulfill his promises. If we follow Abraham’s example, we will be faithful long before the promise is fulfilled. Think of the promise God made to Abraham about his descendants. How would you feel if you were 100 years old and had not one child? That seems like a laughable promise. Abraham could have ignored it, but his faith was strong.
If God says it, it is so. What sort of promises from God are you counting on as you live a faithful life? Has God come to you with a revelation like he did Abraham? We need to be listening intently with faithful hearts. Of course, we have the promise that Jesus will return and the assurance of eternal life with God. Those are such amazing promises.
I choose faith and a life lived in communion with God. Is it a perfect life without trouble or struggle? No. But it is a life of peace. I would have troubles or struggles no matter what. But having faith in my creator gives me hope and peace amidst the storm. Can you resonate with that?
I want God to declare me righteous. I want people to see me as faithful. How about you? What do you want?
Let’s pray. Lord, forgive me when I forget who is in control. I trust you and believe you are there holding my life in your hands. I thank you for what you are doing in my life and look forward to watching a new chapter unfold. Each day is a gift. I give you thanks. I pray that my faith will only deepen as I grow closer to you. May my example help others to find you and love you as I do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
