John 11:1-27 – What a Teachable Moment!

Read John 11:1-27

We have just gotten started with this story. The true miraculous sign is yet to come. But Jesus has pretty much already spilled the beans about that one. His disciples are about to see yet another jaw-dropping act of God. The setup in the first part of this Chapter is worth taking a look at all by itself, as it builds up to something beyond comprehension.

What we see Jesus do here is meant to teach and to bless. The teaching part comes first. Jesus knew that his disciples were having a hard time with their unbelief. It had to be hard to totally grasp that the Messiah you had been waiting for your whole life was standing there before you.

Jesus had been performing signs and wonders all along, but still, there was doubt, even among his closest friends and followers. This sign would hopefully seal the deal for them and teach them once and for all who Jesus was.

But Jesus had to create the teachable moment by hesitating and letting nature take its course. The disciples were already curious about why Jesus was acting so nonchalantly about rushing off to help his close friend, Lazarus. How distraught the sisters must have been leading up to Jesus’ arrival. Lazarus’ story would be more than a life lesson.

Did you notice that the disciples were worried for Jesus’ safety? They couldn’t believe Jesus would take the risk to go back to the same place where they recently tried to stone him. Jesus’ confidence had to amaze them as well as frustrate them. But Thomas was bold and offered to go to die with Jesus. While not necessary in this moment, Thomas’ sentiment should not be surprising to us.

It calls to mind how we would respond, that is, how we would defend Jesus if put in that position. Have you ever been asked to defend your faith? Does your testimony include who Jesus is to you and how your life has been changed by him?

What struck you most in this story? For me, it was the two different responses to Jesus’ arrival by Lazarus’ sisters. Martha rushed out to meet Jesus even though she was disappointed he didn’t get there in time. She told Jesus she believed he could do anything when she said, “But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Her sister, Mary, on the other hand, stayed back at the house. It was Martha who boldly professed she knew Jesus was the Messiah. I hope I would have been more like Martha in this scenario.

This tragedy had already taught lessons to these followers. Some had realized their devotion, and others their faith. Many more blessings would soon follow. Stay tuned.

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Lord Jesus, you always know what’s best for me. I trust you with my life. I stand waiting for my next assignment and thank you for this message. I want to rush to your side and believe your promises like Martha. Help me to discern your voice from my own. I await each teachable moment with gratitude. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
