Acts 14:8-20 – God is God

Read Acts 14:8-20

I remember studying the Greek gods in elementary school one year in Social Studies. It made an impression on me because at that young age, all I knew was there was one God, the God we learned about on Sunday morning. Who were these other gods? Zeus and Aphrodite are the names I remember. I was the kid who looked forward to Sunday School and learning the Bible stories. These Greek gods never came up. (I guess we didn’t read this passage!) Those were my roots, and I am thankful that seeds were planted when I was young.

I’ve never been a witness to any remarkable miracle like the miracle described in today’s reading. Have you? My life is not over, and I am always looking for God to move in incredible ways. He has certainly moved in my life. I can clearly see his hand visible in so many of my turning points. How have you witnessed God moving in your life or in those around you? Acts 14:1-7 – Conflict Will Come

Read Acts 14:1-7

The grass is not always greener on the other side. Today we see an example of this truth. It’s not like Paul and Barnabas were expecting a new town to be without issues. But we see the same scenario playing out again. The twists and turns may be a little different, but the similarities are striking.

What I liked about this account is the apostles stayed there “a long time.” They didn’t jump ship, they persevered. Through their ministry, many people heard the Good News and believed. They were bold, and God rewarded their faithfulness by revealing himself through the miraculous signs and wonders. How bold are you in standing on your faith in the midst of conflict? What setbacks have you encountered that have caused you to step back, move on or reevaluate? Continue reading “Acts 14:1-7 – Conflict Will Come”

Acts 13:44-51 – Open Your Mouth

Read Acts 13:44-51

Not everyone will follow Christ and be saved. That can be a hard pill to swallow because we know God doesn’t want anyone left behind. Yet, when you have tried and given a good effort and they still don’t see, you have to move on and not let it bother you. As they did while leaving Antioch, shake the dust off their feet. Even Jesus had said it’s okay when you have done your best and there is still opposition. Just let them be.

Because God doesn’t want anyone left behind, you can be sure you won’t be the last one to come into contact with those “stubborn” ones. You have planted a seed of faith. The Holy Spirit will swoop in and help it to grow by other means. What is important is that we go and do. We must open our mouths and share the Gospel. The believing is up to God’s intervention, and we may not get to see the results. Be okay with that. Continue reading “Acts 13:44-51 – Open Your Mouth”

Acts 13:13-43 – They Got It

Read Acts 13:13-43

Paul and Barnabas continue on in their journey, together with their companions.  Today’s reading takes place in a synagogue with both Jews (referred to as Men of Israel) and Gentiles, referred to as God-fearing Gentiles. This gathering was “mixed” which reveals the tolerance for co-mingling was improving in this area. I doubt this kind of cross-cultural mix could be found in Jerusalem! Interesting that those leading the service, referred to as “prophets,” recognized Paul and Barnabas as having a message they should all hear. God was orchestrating something beautiful.

The Spirit stirred in them. The same Spirit that had commissioned Paul and Barnabas to get the word out. Clearly, the Spirit was alive in these people and had prepared them to hear the message proclaimed that day. The message was simple. It connected stories and beliefs they had had all along and bridged it with the new reality of God’s grace. Old Testament meets New Testament. The people were hungry for more. Acts 13:1-12 – Sent Out

Read Acts 13:1-12

If you are familiar with the Books of Acts at all, you’ve probably been waiting for Paul’s missionary journeys. There are several, and today we walk with Saul and his companions as they are commissioned by the Holy Spirit for “special work.” Barnabas and Saul are prayed for by the other church leaders in Antioch, and then on their way they go. John Mark goes along as an assistant.

I can understand a little how they were feeling. They were embarking on a new adventure, not sure how it was going to play out. They had the assurance God was leading them. David and I have been called to several different churches over the years, being on a new mission for God. Most recently, we left everything familiar in the United States and have settled in Mexico. We’re waiting on God to show us where he wants us to use our gifts. We are where we have felt led to go. Excitement. Exhilaration. I am totally looking forward to how God is working behind the scenes. Each new day is an adventure. Continue reading “Acts 13:1-12 – Sent Out”
