Genesis 41:1-36 – Feast or Famine?

Read Genesis 41:1-36

What were you doing two years ago today? Sometimes it’s hard to imagine or even remember as each day can look much like the next. Two years ago for me, I was rehearsing with a choir here in Mexico in preparation for a Christmas concert. It was a great way to meet new people and also using my gifts. Seems like yesterday, but at the same time, many moons have passed and we have grown so much in the two years time.

It had been two years for Joseph between yesterday’s reading and our reading today. Thinking of the time span is helpful to give us perspective. Now Joseph is finally remembered by the cupbearer as being the one who can interpret dreams. Pharaoh had two dreams that were stumping everyone. When he heard of this Hebrew boy, he called for Joseph, who was cleaned up and brought before Pharaoh.

Again, Joseph wanted to make it clear it was not him who could interpret the dreams. God was in charge of that. In fact, as it turns out, God had a message for Pharaoh that would make a difference for many people. God had placed this all into motion, and Joseph was ready to be used by God again.

It was a prophecy that we will see play out. We may have heard the phrase, “feast or famine” as it relates to what may be happening in your life. You may be experiencing great abundance or great need, but through it all staying the course and being faithful to God is what we are called to do.

Pharaoh had been given a gift. A glimpse into the future. How many times do we wish we would know what the future holds? If we did know, what would we change? I heard an interesting quote yesterday. We need to live like we were going to die tomorrow and learn as if we’re going to live forever. We should always be learning, but we should always be enjoying life to its fullest. So many times we allow circumstances to keep us from doing the things we really love and enjoy. Why do we always wait for a special occasion to use our fine china or wear our fancy clothes? Do we ever say, “someday I will…”? What are we waiting for?

We may not know what the future holds, and that’s okay. We need to live our lives in the moment. God created us to worship him. How are you worshiping him today? Here’s a song “MADE TO WORSHIP” you can listen to HERE.  As long as we remember whose we are and what our main mission is (to love and worship God), the rest of our lives will fall into place. Whether we are experiencing feast or famine, overwhelm or peace, abundance or want, God is with us. That is a truth we can rely on.

Let’s pray. Father, I thank you for how you are working behind the scenes in my life. I may not see all of the wheels in motion or know where the path is leading, but you do. I trust you with my whole heart. You have it all worked out and you’re not worried. I do wish you’d give me a couple of clues to make sure I don’t deviate from your will for me and mess things up. I thank you for the words you have given me and the heart of encouragement and care for others. Use me today and in the weeks to come to bring comfort to those around me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
