1 Timothy 3:8-13 – Church Deacons

1 Timothy 3:8-13

And now we address deacons.  The expectation for deacons extends to their wives as well.  What is a deacon? I’ve heard that used by some churches today, but not in the church I grew up in.  For purposes of thinking through this passage, let’s take it back to its roots. At the time Paul wrote this, a deacon would be a servant, anyone who serves the body of Christ.  A deacon can certainly be a “leader”, too, as in our previous reflection, but deacons are servants. Note, that according to Paul, wives (or spouses) of these “deacons” are also held accountable.

Should we all strive to be deacons?  If we have the servant heart of Jesus, then our answer should be yes!  Does this list of requirements seem reasonable or do you have trouble with any of them?  Are you doing well in terms of being a Biblical deacon?

I think of this passage from Matthew 20:26, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” I’m not sure I seek to be “great,” but I do seek to please God in all I say and do.

Paul was wise in his counsel to Timothy.  The young church needed some direction, some structure. By using these passages, Paul was protecting the church from false teachers who were very prevalent during that day. I would say there are still plenty of false teachers today.  To have leaders and deacons strong in faith and character would only benefit the young church as it continued to grow and flourish.

Look around your community of faith or even your neighborhood. Do you see a need where you could help serve?  Pray about that this week and see what God leads you to do.

Let’s pray!  Father give me a heart to serve as you served.  May I serve You willingly and faithfully each day. Guide me and help me until that day I see You face to face.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
