When you got up this morning, what was your first thought?
Maybe it was something like — “Is it morning already?” Or “It’s time to hit the gym.” Or “I better make a grocery list before I forget.” Or “Thank you, God, for another day to live to be more like you.”
Don’t feel bad if it wasn’t the latter. We can get caught up in the busyness of life. It’s bound to happen. Sometimes just getting a good night of sleep can be a challenge. I know from experience, however, that when my day starts in thanksgiving to God, my mindset is heading in the right direction.
How did today’s text empower you? Perhaps you’re even feeling a little under qualified? But you are a child of God and you can claim that inheritance. It is a gift that no one can take away from you. Our lives may end here on earth one day, but as children of God, imitators of Jesus, we will live forever with God. No more pain, no more busyness, only peace and joy.
What a promise! Thankfulness to God can be the only response. I don’t see doing away with sexual immorality, impurity, greed, coarse jokes or foolish talk as a curse or a limit to my happiness or creativity. In fact, I have struggled with the idea of greed. In my profession, there seems to be such a focus on making money and achieving success.
For me, it comes down to the heart and the intent. What is our reason for wanting success? Is it for selfish gain or to help promote the kingdom? There is so much we can do to help this broken world with a little cash. We see so much division between the rich and poor. If only every rich man were to invest in the kingdom rather than things of this world.
We are told here to imitate God. How do we do that? Simply be loving and follow the example of Jesus. It may sound simple, but it’s very difficult. How do we wrap our brains around the sacrifice Jesus made for us? How many of us would do that for a friend or family member? Take it a step farther, would you die for a stranger? John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Sacrifice.
Jesus did it for us and for all, and it was pleasing to God. We need to act in ways that are pleasing to God even if they are out of our comfort zone. We need to be ready to take a look at our deeds and actions. When we focus on what Jesus has done for us out of his love for us, we should be moved to want to be better for him.
Selfishness is not from God. If it has a stronghold on you, ask for help. The devil uses this, as well as anger and other destructive behaviors to keep himself alive within us. It’s time we take a stand and sacrifice a little for our creator and savior. What needs to change in your life today?
Let’s pray. Father God, I am trying to imitate you in all I say and do. You know my heart’s desire is to worship you and bring you praise. I also want to help others to know you and appreciate all you have done for them. I will be a faithful steward of all the wealth you give so I can give back and help those in need. I am waiting for your provision and direction. I am thankful you have given me life and breath along with the freedom to do your work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
