Acts 6:8-15 – Lies, Lies, Lies

Read Acts 6:8-15

In our previous reading, we met Stephen. He was one of the seven Spirit-filled believers chosen to serve. He was chosen for his faith. Today, he is taking heat from the opposition. Usually when you think of opposition, it would be from those on a different side of an issue or belief system. Here it is other Jews that were trying to corner him. Have you ever felt like you were being ganged up on and bullied? It’s even worse when lies are spread without foundation.

The Spirit was with Stephen, and I’m sure the people were amazed at the wisdom Stephen spoke. They had to resort to being devious using others to lie and give false testimony. Why were these Jews so bothered by Stephen? What had he done to them? We may often ask those same questions and wonder what it was we have done to be receiving the ridicule or blame for things we have not done.

It seems like the people in our reading today felt threatened. Why, I’m not sure. It may have had something to do with the culture of that time. Not everyone was a fan of Jesus. Does that sound familiar? We certainly see individuals and groups today that are doing everything in their power to shut down the Christian movement. I suppose it happens when people need a scapegoat to take the attention off them.

Have you ever been on the hot seat for your faith? How did you respond? Personally, I can’t remember a time. I am not ashamed for my beliefs. In fact, I am energized when I share my faith. That’s the Holy Spirit. I must rely on the Spirit’s wisdom to speak through me, like he did Stephen, because I am certainly no “expert”.

What I do have is my story. We all have “our” story. My story tells how Jesus changed my life, or how being a follower has given me peace, or how being saved makes me feel. It’s my story. It’s my truth. Nobody can say it isn’t so.

So, what happens when you feel like everyone is out to get you? Paranoia can set in. We must stand firm in faith. We’ll read in our next lesson how Stephen responded.

Let’s pray. Lord I thank you for the gifts you’ve given me. Please forgive me when I don’t see the opportunities you’ve laid before me to speak out for you. Open my mouth with your wisdom when the time is right. I pray for those in harm’s way, enduring hardship in your name. I pray for those who feel cornered and lost, not sure how to get out of the muck. I stand against the evil one’s lies that try to get me off track. I am your child and you are my King. Thank you for the opportunity to shine for you in your kingdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
